Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is defined by the ability of an individual to understand, control and perceive emotions. Some psychologists believe that emotional intelligence is an inbuilt characteristic, whereas others believe that it can be learned and improved over time. Emotional intelligence plays a very important role in our lives.

The ability to understand and respond to different emotions coming from other people is important. Just as important it is to express and control your own emotions. Imagine you could not understand when your teacher was angry at you or when your friend was sad. It would be chaotic and difficult.

Emotional intelligence comprises of four characteristics:
1) Self-awareness

It is the ability to recognize your own emotions and their effects on your thoughts and actions.

2) Self-management

It is the ability to control your emotions and feelings. You do not let your emotions, such as anger, get the best of you. You are able to manage your emotions and express them in a healthy and controlled manner.

3) Social awareness

It refers to the ability to understand the emotion, feelings, concerns, problems, and needs of other people. It means to be able to put yourself in the shoes of others and feel empathy.

4) Social ability

To have emotional intelligence is to know how to maintain healthy relationships with others, to be able to communicate openly, and to understand others. It is to be able to work together with a team.

What is the importance of emotional intelligence?

Intelligence quotient (IQ) isn’t everything when it comes to being successful in life. You need emotional intelligence as well. People who are academically excellent, smart, and yet emotionally vacant are not the most successful and happiest people in life.

Your IQ can help you get admission to your favorite college, but you need emotional intelligence to help you manage stress and concentrate during the exam. Emotional Intelligence affects all aspects of your life, including your performance at work or studies, physical health, mental health, and of course, your relationships.

Physical health

Stress is an emotion that most of us are unable to control. Medically stress is a silent killer. Taking too much stress can damage your organs and cause serious health problems such as increased blood pressure, headaches, reduced immunity, stomach issues, and risk of getting a heart attack.

Mental health

Mental health is as important as physical health because it can greatly impact your body’s functions. Excessive stress can cause depression and anxiety. If you are unable to form healthy and strong relationships, you might start feeling lonely, isolate and become a victim of low self-esteem, which will cause even further damage to your mental health.

Relationships

If you have good emotional intelligence, you are able to control your emotions and express them in a healthy way. Also, it allows you to feel how others are feeling. This leads to better understanding and communication between you and them.
